Atrio (ENG/ESP)

by Toño Pérez and José Polo, decipher what Atrio is and its transcendence with a canonical, simple and unitary development.

The book by Toño and Jose, the perfect hosts. Gastronomy, architecture and oenology. These three fundamental pillars of Atrio are the central focus of the 272 page book in which Ferran Adrià, Rafael Moneo and Telmo Rodríguez reveal what Atrio is all about.

The book also features Atrio's 40 iconic recipes.

Atrio is above all a place of unpredictable encounters. It is the city of Cáceres and in it the dream of Jose and Toño, its authors. And it is the coincidence in the search for the optimal conditions to enjoy the attractions offered by the relationship between a historic urban space and the private areas of the hotel. It is also the affectionate concert of a long life together before a consistent project of professional commitment. And, at this moment, it is the happy harmony with two other dream makers: the architects Emilio Tuñón Álvarez and Luis Moreno Mansilla.

The central space of a house as a place of relationship is something more than a sequence of transit from the intimate to the shared. In Atrio this place of reference is, above all, the spatial representation of our experience. If the desire to receive well is the foundation that propitiates the attitude to enjoy, as is the desire that is never satisfied, if the play of sensorial manifestations in gastronomic practice has behind it the constant aspiration for excellence that characterises the Atrio team, the pleasure of inhabiting it is the best proof of its uniqueness.

The site forms part of a scenography of the memory of the past and the slow sequences of approach to the volume of the building show a canonical, simple and unitary development, always in harmony with the surrounding environment. The interior opens up to spaces coordinated with exquisite domestic naturalness.

Time, as it passes, offers the ability to exercise the gaze through changing light effects with reflections, asymmetries and transparencies, with materials, textures and colours, oriented towards real or illusory perspectives, creating a sense of comfort and expanding the vision from the most intimate proximity to distant landscapes from a serene climate.

Moving and sumptuous in its spatial contemplation, the Atrio winery is even more so from the wine point of view. It starts with its large selection of champagnes, with 44 cellars, 28 of which are owned by small winemakers who produce only from their own vineyards. This is one of the keys to this winery where the big brands, known and respected throughout the world, coexist in an admirable relationship with the smallest winegrowers, owners of little more than a hectare and capable of showing us in each bottle the place where the grapes are born.
